If you look into our Courtyard area you will see a small white box with a little roof on top. This is the home to 30,000 of the busiest employees at The Royal Sonesta Harbor Court Baltimore. In May 2011, the hotel became steward of 30,000 honeybees as part of our Land, Air and Sea environmental sustainability initiative. Unfortunately, we lost our bees for a few years due to a national virus in 2016 but they are BACK! Currently the Honeybees are supplied by BeeFriendlyApaiary.com whose mission is to offer a variety of ways to help educate our community about the importance of pollinators so everyone understands the multiple benefits that pollinators like bees have for our daily lives.
Honey bees have been on the earth for millions of years. Honey contains enzymes, minerals, and water and is produced by honey bees by collecting and transforming nectar from plants. Honey has been used by human civilization for food, medicine, and cosmetics for thousands of years all over the world.
Honey bees have one of the keenest sense of smells in the animal kingdom and when flying, a honey bee’s wing can beat 200 beats per second making a distinctive buzz or hum. The average colony of honey bees is 95% female containing one queen and up to 50,000 female workers which are the daughters of the queen. The female workers do all the necessary work from building wax combs, feeding and tending the brood, foraging, and every other aspect of work a hive does. The average worker produces approximately 1/10th of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime. During the active season, a workers life span is thought to be about 40 days and during the inactive season the workers lifespan is several months. In the active season, a honey bee worker will visit 50-100 flowers per foraging trip. Honey bees communicate through dancing, touching, smelling, and making certain tones.
Although Honeybees can travel up to five miles daily, we have attempted to save them all that flight time with the placement of our 7th floor rooftop herb garden. Early in the morning is the best time to observe the honeybees hard at work on the 7th floor. The Honeybees need approximately 50 quarts of honey to survive through the long cold winter months. The excess honey above the 50 quarts can be harvested for use in our amazing Chef’s creative recipes. Honeybees are unlike any other bee, they are the only "BEE" that produces food - honey for humans to consume.
Be sure to look on our seasonal menu in Explorer's for items made with our very own honey, especially our signature Honey based cocktails & meals which are un-BEE-lievable!!!
View our 2nd floor rotating Art Gallery, curated by local artist Crystal Moll. Crystal's inspiration is dawn from urban landscapes and captivated by the street scenes of Baltimore and the farms of Maryland's Eastern shore.
One example of how each Sonesta Hotel creates an atmosphere of originality is the Sonesta Art Collection. This group of works consists of more than 7,000 contemporary paintings, sculptures, original prints and tapestries by both emerging and established artists such as Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Sol Lewitt, Jan Dibbets, Malcolm Morley and Carl Palazzolo.
The works reflect the artist's vision, while illuminating some of the most significant movements in contemporary art, including Conceptual, Minimal and Pop Art. The works of art are placed in public spaces at The Royal Sonesta Harbor Court Baltimore, and in most guest rooms as well. Each work of art is carefully considered to create an aesthetically pleasing and meaningful statement. Many works have been specially commissioned for a particular space, in an effort to fully integrate the architecture and design of the hotel.
Sonesta's Art Collection is recognized as one of the first corporate hotel programs dedicated to original art by nationally and internationally-known artists. The collection was initiated in the early 1960's and is overseen by Sonesta's former Executive Chairman, Roger P. Sonnabend, and his wife, Joan, who was an art collector and owned Obelisk Gallery in Boston. The special atmosphere that has become a Sonesta trademark is the result of close cooperation between architects, designers, Sonesta's executives and employees, and Joan Sonnabend's vision.

The Globe-Trotting Founders of Explorers curated the original décor with treasures collected during their travels. While re:imagining Explorers, we toured the world’s myriad cuisines in search of a new concept for our fabled room. Finally, we stumbled upon a select group of Establishments; “The American Gastropub.”
We heard from you, our guests, that you wanted great food and great drinks in a casual yet upscale setting. Originally hailing from the British Isles, a Gastropub balances the importance of delicious food with a creative drink menu all in a comfortable atmosphere. This was a perfect match! With Exploration as our “true north” we offer comfort food with a bit of culinary flair and indigenous ingredients, locally sourced beers and craft spirit based cocktails. We strive to bring you the best our region has to offer and with service to match!
And as they say in the Isles: “May your glass be ever full, may the roof over your head be always strong, and may your belly be eternally full from your latest adventure at Explorers!”
Try the Harbor Court Honey Wings prepared with product harvested from the hotel's own apiary. Did you know we have 50,000 honey bees on our 7th floor apiary? The excess honey can be harvested for use in our Chef’s creative recipes which are un-BEE-lievable!
Executive Chef Will Reed has over 20 plus years in the culinary field with his formal education / training from Baltimore International College for the Culinary Arts. He successfully assisted with the re-positioning of Explorers from its traditional American cuisine to an amazing American gastro-pub. Explorers has a marriage of high-end food with a casual dining experience. Through the use of locally sourced farms as well as Maryland staples such as the traditional crab cake and a pan seared rockfish. Lastly, the bar’s focus point is the barrel aged whiskey using local and national whiskeys aged right on location.

We Do Inspiring Weddings
"...I cannot recommend this place enough for any bride!"
"The Royal Sonesta and their wedding coordinator; Jay Day did an amazing job making my wedding day perfect! The Royal Sonesta hosts only one wedding (unlike many other hotels), which I especially liked so I didn't have to worry about sharing space with another bride and groom.....We trusted Jay to set up our decorations and centerpieces using his creative skills and they all looked perfect! Thanks to Jay and the staff at The Royal Sonesta, my husband and I got to enjoy every second of our special day without a single worry. I cannot recommend this place enough for any bride!"

"...I cannot say enough wonderful things about the experience.."
"My husband and I had our wedding reception at The Royal Sonesta Harbor Court and I cannot say enough wonderful things about the experience. The location was perfect for our out of town guests, being within walking distance to the Inner Harbor, and the rooms were luxurious, clean and comfortable. Also, the staff was kind and helpful to us and all our guests during the entire stay. For our wedding reception, the event was fantastic. The ballroom is beautiful with grand windows over looking the Inner Harbor, and the food - from appetizers to entree - was delicious! Our coordinator, Jay Day, was outstanding. From day one, he was timely in all responses, honest, helpful, organized, and a joy to work with. I felt confident throughout the entire planning process knowing that Jay was there making sure the wedding day went as planned. We are so happy we chose The Royal Sonesta as our wedding venue and would recommend it to anyone planning a wedding or other event."

"...The wedding was absolutely perfect."
"While I am not the bride, my daughter and I worked very close together through the entire planning process. From the moment we walked into Harbor Court January 2015 and met Jay Day I truly hoped that Harbor Court would be our selection. Jay was perfect from start to finish. He was friendly, knowledgeable, timely in returning emails or calls, helpful in suggestions on menu, decor, other vendors and I could go on and on. The hotel was under a major update when we toured the hotel. It was exciting to hear Jay describe what to envision for my daughter's wedding New Year's Eve. We loved the fact that Harbor a Court is a boutique hotel. Understanding that her wedding would be the only event was a huge plus. We used 5 of the banquet rooms throughout the event. While menu concepts were provided, our daughter and son in law knew exactly what they wanted and Jay was quick to accommodate. The entire staff were personable, friendly and provided excellent customer service from our 1st day as a potential client to the last day as we left the hotel on New Year's Day. I had to go back in and thank the staff again. They felt like family to me as no matter what the need was for us from December 30th - January 1st they took care of us."
"...memories to last a lifetime."
The wedding was absolutely perfect. Our family and friends raved to us how great the staff, food and rooms were. It could not have been better. We thank Jay and his team for a memories to last a lifetime. I never read any of the prior reviews until right before I started to write mine. If I had read them last January I would have thought 'wow that is great but is it so?' I can honestly tell you 'it is so!' You will make the best decision to have your daughter's or son's wedding here at the The Royal Sonesta Harbor Court Hotel. You are in great hands with Jay Day! Thanks Jay!"
