Christmas celebrations in Colombia, where 90 percent of population are Roman Catholics, will begin in early December with a ceremony in honor of the Virgin Mary. On the afternoon of December 7, the families light candles and use them to border the streets, sidewalks and parks until entire cities are illuminated. On December 8 brings a national holiday commemorating the Immaculate Conception in which more prayers and candles are offered to the Virgin Mary. Christmas trees are decorated on December 16 with the beginning of the novena, which involves a ritual in Colombia nine days of prayer with a rosary in anticipation of Christmas Day. During this time of the celebration of Christ's birth, groups of friends and family, often cover a whole town or neighborhood, gathering each evening to pray. Carols are sung around the nativity scene playing an important part of Christmas celebrations in Colombia. Most Colombians attend Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve before returning home for dinner. Christmas meal often includes a special potato soup called llama ajiaco, homemade bread, donuts and custard, and a dessert made of corn. The gifts are brought by "El Niño Jesus" at the foot of the beds of children by the next morning, and after a rest day with the family, the Christmas season is completed.
