Posada offers Lake Titicaca Exploration Getaway

PUNO (May 8, 2009) - The Sonesta Posadas del Inca Puno has introduced an Exploration Package offering several ways to explore Lake Titicaca from the scenic hotel located on its shores. During a visit to the highest navigable lake in the world, guests can enjoy an island tour of the Uros Islands and an opportunity to visit with this native people. The Yavari, a State Registered Museum, is docked on Puno Bay directly in front of the hotel and offers another way to embrace the local history and see the lake from the deck of a working ship. The package, including the Uros Island and Yavari tours, is offered at a rate of $110/130 per night single/ double through July 31, 2009.  The Uros islands are made entirely of reeds and float on the surface of the lake. This way of life began over 500 years ago when the Uros people built the islands in an effort to isolate themselves from more hostile tribes. Many of the inhabitants of the islands still practice the old traditions of fishing, trapping birds and living on lake plants. They are welcoming of tourists as a way to continue their way of life.  The Yavari ship was built in England in 1862, and delivered in pieces, by mule, to Lake Titicaca over two miles (3,810 meters) above sea level. After close to 100 years of faithful service, she was found slipping rapidly into decay. The ship has been restored, her engine is repaired and she waits to be fitted out as a Victorian cruise ship in order to sail once again. Guests are welcome to explore the ship and understand its place in Peruvian history.
