Malecón 2000 is an urban, historical park on the Simón Bolívar Pier overlooking the Guayas River and home of the tall ship, Guayas. Nearby is the Mercado Artesanal, the largest artisan market in the city offering more than 240 shops. Parque Centenario is the largest park in the town centre and also close to the hotel. La Merced and San Francisco are famous churches in the area, and the beautiful cemetery Cerro el Carmen, is within close proximity. Other popular attractions include the Botanical Gardens, Parque Seminario in front of the Cathedral and the Parque de Las Iguanas, home to many iguanas, a Japanese Koi pond, and an equestrian statue of Simón Bolívar. The old district, Las Peñas, is the artistic center of the city with 400 year-old houses that have been converted into art galleries and studios so that visitors can get a feel for picturesque, colonial Guayaquil.
