At Sonesta, we are passionate about our destinations. We want you to be steps away from the best of everything — and you are. Whatever your curiosity, whatever you’d like to discover or explore, we’re here to guide you on your adventure.
Between Sonesta Great Bay and the Great Salt Pond, you will find Philipsburg, the capital of Dutch St. Maarten. Founded in 1763 by John Philips, a Scottish captain in the Dutch navy, it soon became a bustling center of international trade.
Today, Philipsburg bustles with a host of duty-free shops, cafés, boutiques and attractions. Its waterfront has become a popular stop for cruise ships, and the town's many restaurants, cafés and night clubs offer many entertainment and dining options every night. Front Street, the main thoroughfare, is lined with duty-free shops that offer everything from Italian leather goods, the latest technology and local handicrafts. Narrow alleyways lead to charming arcades and courtyards filled with flowers. Throughout the capital, visitors will also find examples of traditional West Indian and colonial architecture, as well as notable historic sites such as Fort Amsterdam, the first Dutch military outpost in the Caribbean.
Downtown Philipsburg is only a few minutes' walk from Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort & Casino.
