Getting Here

Sonesta Great Bay Beach hotel is located on the Dutch side of the island, a 25-minute drive from Princess Juliana International Airport.

Airlines

Air service to Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) in St. Maarten is provided by American Airlines, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, Northwest, USAirways, KLM, Spirit Air, Air France, Corsair, Air Caraibes, Copa Airlines, United, LIAT, Windward Islands Airways (WINAIR) and many other major airlines.

Entry Requirements

U.S. citizens must have a valid passport and a return/continuing ticket. Naturalized citizens or Green Card holders must have a valid passport, USA Visa or Green Card and a return/continuing ticket. Canadian and European Community citizens need a valid passport and a return/continuing ticket.

Taxi from the Airport

There are no meters, so ask about the fare in advance! Approximate fares (March 2010):

  • to Marigot or Philipsburg, $15-$20 USD
  • to Grand Case, $20-$25 USD
  • to Orient Bay, around $25 USD
  • to Maho Beach hotels, $8 USD

Extra passengers will pay a fee of $4 USD. Luggage fees will differ on each side of the island, but passengers should be prepared to pay US$1 for each piece of luggage that they have.

Between 10:00 p.m. and midnight, there is a 25% surcharge, and between midnight and 6:00 a.m., there is a 50% surcharge. Taxi rates are fixed and your taxi driver should have a copy of the rates that are often posted at major pick-up centers. Taxis may be found outside airport customs arrivals, at a taxi desk. When you exit the airport, drive east following the signs for Philipsburg. After approximately 12 minutes drive, turn right in the first large roundabout (follow the Philipsburg sign) and turn right again in the second smaller roundabout on top of the hill. Drive towards Little and Great Bay and along the coastal road until you see Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort.

Airport Departure Tax

For international destinations, there is a departure tax of US$30 for travelers ages two and older. For islands within the Netherlands Antilles, the departure tax is US$6. Many airlines include the tax in your ticket, so please check with your carrier.

Vaccinations

No vaccination certificates are required unless arriving from an area experiencing an epidemic.
