Local Area
Cambridge is the spirited, slightly mischievous side of Boston, located just a bridge away on the “left bank” of the Charles River. Packed with international flair and a youthful vitality, Cambridge is a city where counter-culture still lives, classic culture thrives, and multicultural is a way of life.
Home to Harvard and MIT, Cambridge is a heady mix of students, scholars, and visitors from around the world. It’s a cosmopolitan college town with an eclectic array of bookstore, coffee houses, blues clubs, street musicians, repertory theaters, and mouthwatering ethnic restaurants. The charm of the Charles River is contagious, and along this picturesque riverfront you’ll see runners, rollerbladers and a fabulous view of the Boston skyline. It’s also the site for terrific festivals, outdoor concerts and spectacular Fourth of July celebrations. Lechmere Square - at the junction of Cambridge and First streets, adjacent to the CambridgeSide Galleria shopping mall. Perhaps best known as the eastern terminus of the MBTA Green Line subway. Inman Square - is the most "funky" and "unique" of the squares, Inman Square is home to many diverse restaurants, bars and boutiques. A new community park was installed and is a favorite place to enjoy some takeout food from the nearby restaurants and ice cream parlors. Porter Square - about a mile north on Massachusetts Avenue from Harvard Square, includes part of the city of Somerville. Harvard Square - this is the site of Harvard University, the oldest university in the United States and is a major Cambridge shopping area (although not as exclusively so as in years past). Central Square - this is perhaps the closest Cambridge has to a downtown and is well-known for its wide variety of ethnic restaurants. Even as recently as the late 1990s, it was rather run-down; it underwent a gentrification in recent years (in conjunction with the development of the nearby University Park at MIT), and continues to grow more upscale. Kendall Square - just over the Longfellow Bridge from Boston, at the eastern end of the MIT campus. Most of Cambridge's large office towers are located here. A flourishing biotech industry has grown up around here. |
